Hello! I am currently doing my masters in clinical mental health counseling.
I got rejected from a few CUNY schools myself, here are the tips I can offer you:
-
Only get letters from Pscyhology professors. Only get professional recommendations from work if it is related to therapy/providing therapy. Otherwise stick to psychology professors. Getting a letter from your abnormal psychology and statistics professor are highly regarded.
-
Do not put anything extra on your application. If they ask for 3 letters, give 3 letters. If they ask for 2 essays, write 2. Providing extra means you are trying to make a thin file look fat, which is suspicious. Keep in mind you are applying to a board who makes a living analyzing people and their behaviors. Most of your faculty will be licensed psychologists and therapists, they can tell.
-
Keep your essay 1 page max. I know they give you 3 pages but you don’t need it. 1 page max, talk about who you are, how you did your undergrad, what you have to offer the program, your goal within the program and after you graduate and that’s it. Don’t bs, don’t fluff the essay, you will get rejected.
-
Attend the respective schools info sessions, more than 1 if you can and ask smart questions in these sessions, the info session host are usually part of the admissions process and will put in a good word for you if you make a striking impression.
-
Even if you get in, you have to pass an interview. Some interviews are group based, 2 faculty and 5 students in 1 session, questions are asked and you are judged with your ability to answer the question, participate and how well you play in teams. Brush up on your theories and theorists. Figure out what is your favorite theory. Sound knowledgeable. Some interviews are in person, 1 on 1 and some require you to write an essay in 20 minutes. Be ready to write/type.
Hope this helps! Good luck.
