Baruch is a non target college, meaning you’ll have a very hard time getting a good job in finance compared to other IVY league colleges nearby. To add to this, the job market in NYC is extremely competitive and also in a slump? Layoffs come and go more frequently than ever before, especially in major careers.

Pro’s of New York and Baruch:

  1. you save MONEY ON TUITION!!! YAY!!
  2. New York City is the leading center of business, finance, accounting, real estate, and so on!!!
  3. Good/Decent finance department. (Depends on who you ask(?))
  4. While being in NYC (world of business, finance, etc) you make great connections with the people you meet!

Con’s of New York and Baruch:

  1. NYC in general is expensive but you can always find ways to save money
  2. Non Target College, but big companies/banks/firms consider Baruch as a “feeder school”(?) (I think I’m using the wrong terminology). They’ll usually hire graduates from Baruch who have top notch grades and experience.
  3. Good finance department(?) I had many great professors who taught me well, other professors I heard about aren’t good at all.
  4. While being in the center of business, it’s extremely competitive to find a job. Experience outside of school is important.
  5. The college community. From my experience and understanding, Baruch is also known as a commuter college, meaning everyone is either running off to their next class, work, study, etc. It may be hard to settle down and build a friend group. I recommend to try to find friends early in the semester or a club.

My experience in Baruch was great, I had to work very hard to get where I am now. I received my masters in Financial engineering years ago from Baruch and now work at a big bank.

My personal opinion would be, if you have the opportunity to go to a target college/IVY, do it. Baruch is great but there are many other great colleges in NYC/NY.
