Okay, this is going to be a bit of a ramble, but let me tell you about my situation and how I dealt with it. I moved to New Jersey, so I wasn’t qualified for in-state tuition. However, since you live in New York, you should be eligible for in-state tuition, which could significantly reduce your costs.

FAFSA now has an option where you can apply as an independent student if you have extenuating circumstances. For example, my mother kicked me out when I was 17, and I’ve had zero contact with her since. I had to file as an independent on FAFSA, and they now have a process for that. If you need any help, let me know—I can guide you through the FAFSA website or anything else.

I go to BMCC, and I had to fully verify that I was an independent student. I worked, paid for my apartment, and was even homeless for some time. They basically needed proof that I was self-supporting. It was this whole process that I can explain to you more if need be.

I don’t want to ramble on in your comments, so feel free to DM me if you want more information and don’t want your super specific personal details out on the reddit world. I’ve been in an incredibly similar situation, and it’s super difficult to navigate when you have zero help.
