As a cuny student, I appreciate you looking out for students who are experiencing rough patches during their college career. I think a lot of us think most professors don’t care about us or don’t notice if one of us is falling behind, so to read this is nice and refreshing.
As per consistency, I think you can tell apart the students who wanna be there and try to make the classroom an efficient and open space for learning from the students who are clearly just there cause they have to be there or have nothing else to do. With that being said, one of my professors this semester and last semester implemented a strategy where they didnt necessarily make attendance a requirement to pass, but more so they would allow 3 absences with no justification required, and on the 4th absence, they’d reach out to the student and ask if everything was ok / if they needed any assistance with any of the coursework etc. The professors approach would then vary according to the students response to their email and they would move from there on. I think this is a nice way for professors to show they care about the students without necessarily overextending themselves. Hopefully this helps a little with what you’re talking about.
happy holidays! :)
