Of course I don’t know your specific context and professors should be posting grades regularly enough that you’re not surprised by the final exam.

However, here’s some context that might be helpful to reframe your perception of professors being lazy.

It takes me about one hour to grade 7 exams. This semester, I had 140 final exams and 35 final papers to grade. The exams took approx. 20 hours to grade. Papers took longer - at least 10 minutes (usually more) per paper. So minimally, it’s going to take me me 26 hours to grade all the finals - IF everything goes as planned.

There are a lot of reasons things don’t go that smoothly - missing papers, Scantron machine shortages and malfunctions, Brightspace/Blackboard not saving things, tracking down students who didn’t complete the final exam and working with them on solutions, etc. (at least 5 hours).

Posting grades in CUNYFirst takes time. It’s clunky and annoying. It took me over an hour to post all my grades on CUNYFirst - they were posted on Brightspace earlier though.

We’re now up to about 33 hours.

The average work week is 35-40 hours. This week we’ve also had to deal with other work-related things such as ratifying our union contract and general tasks associated with our jobs. For example, many professors have research and professional development requirements on top of their teaching.

All of this is to say that it’s very, very reasonable that it would take a professor a week to finalize and post grades. It took me exactly that long and I stayed up til 1:30 AM grading on Tuesday morning to make it happen.

I understand students are stressed and anxious, but please consider that we aren’t being lazy and there’s more going on behind the scenes than you know.

I would love to do nothing but grading and finish everything in 2 days during finals week, but there are other factors outside of work that make it impossible for me to just grade and grade and grade until it’s done.

Again, I don’t know your context and situation. So, I could be completely wrong here. Hopefully my explanation is useful to some folks and helps clarify what goes on after you finish exams.

Hang in there!
