CUNY Professor here… question for you all

CUNY Professor here… question for you all

I love my job, and I love the students. I’ve worked for CUNY (one of the community colleges) and some private universities throughout my career (Not too long, 5 years at this point). While I prefer the rules set at private universities and the consistency with attendance, CUNY has gifted me with meeting some amazing personalities and I love the opportunity to help.

But my main worry is the “buzzer beater” habits of probably half the students I come across. We’re great for that first month, then it gets shaky in October, then completely vanishing in November, and I won’t hear anything until a week before finals. At this point, they’re practically begging me for a passing grade. Out of fairness to the students who have been making the effort throughout the semester, participating consistently and meeting the deadlines, that can’t be justified without some kind of documentation. And it never feels good to say “I’m sorry, you can’t pass the class”. Is there anything we can do to help some of you be more consistent? Do the emails from academic advisors not help? Are the progress reports helpful? I am happy for all the progress I see with the students who are making the effort consistently and getting the A, but the ones who fail still weigh on my mind. Hope you’re taking care of yourselves this week.
