Finish your degree as fast as you can, these funding freezes are not going away

Finish your degree as fast as you can, these funding freezes are not going away

I don’t think enough people here really appreciate how these freezes on federal funding are going to affect students and the campuses.

Do not make the mistake of thinking that the freezes were accidental or an error or gone. And do not make the mistake of thinking that the campus’ will fight for you or even give you any warning. They had NO plan to deal with this right now despite it being planned for over a year.

CUNY is in a budget crisis. Federal Funding is a giant part of CUNY’s core budget AND a part of the programs that support students AND a part of the research programs that professors do.

There’s not much you can do but:

DO NOT leave unfinished requirements for the next semester

YOU CAN STILL ADD COURSES RIGHT NOW, THE DEADLINE AT MOST CAMPUSES IS 1/31

The Community Colleges ALSO are still accepting EPERMITS and their Spring starts in MARCH

Many of them have online lab courses too

do not allow yourself to do poorly in courses and ā€˜make up for the W/INC/Fā€ in another semester.

Make use of the winter/summer sessions too.

take this seriously. A single extra course each semester and a course in the winter summer can get you out more than a semester early. It will really suck to take on huge loans for an extra semester or two, or to be forced out with a semester or two to go. It is GOING to happen to people.

Don’t leave the ā€˜hard’ requirements for the end either, get them done asap. Science departments are being hit especially hard. If you find yourself in your last semester needing to make up a general course or just hit a target number of credits, that’s a lot easier and more likely to happen that finding a science course or a lab course or any of the harder core requirements.

I don’t think I would transfer to a 4year school right now before finishing the 2yr associates degree either.

Be prepared for your department merging/closing, or your campus closing (that will happen if they go back to a full freeze), or something happening to your aid and support that makes it very very difficult for you to attend.
