Moving to NYC for Columbia Dental – Need Advice on Elementary Schools for My Kindergartener
Hi everyone,
I’ll be starting at Columbia University College of Dental Medicine in January 2026, and my family will be relocating from Tampa, Florida. My son is currently in kindergarten at Roland Park K-8 IB Magnet School, which we love because of its International Baccalaureate focus and strong community.
As we prepare for the move, I’m looking for recommendations for great elementary schools in NYC (ideally public or magnet, but I’m open to other strong options) that would be a good fit for him. We’d like to rent somewhere close to his future school, but also within a manageable commute to CUCDM (Washington Heights).
If you’re a parent familiar with NYC’s IB or magnet programs, Blue Ribbon schools, or just strong neighborhood elementary schools that would compare well to Roland Park, I’d love your insights. Which schools should be on my radar, and what neighborhoods would make sense for a family with a kindergartener (and an infant) balancing quality education with a reasonable commute?
Thanks so much for any advice!
